The Atoke banana bell, also known by its local names ‘apitua’ and ‘toke,’ is an integral component of Anlo-Ewe percussion ensembles, which resonate through the musical traditions of Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Each bell is hand-forged from recycled iron by skilled Togolese blacksmiths, ensuring sustainability and support for local craftsmanship. The banana-shaped instrument delivers clear, crisp tones. Traditionally played by holding in the palm and striking with a metal beater, the Atoke bell can also be adapted as a dunun bell in larger drum ensembles.
