“The Swatter” is a small, red, wooden baseball bat that has been distinctively modified to serve a purpose far removed from its original sporting intent. The bat’s top is embedded with large, bent nails, hammered in to create an intimidating, makeshift weapon. Its handle is wrapped with what was once bright sports tape, now faded and stained, hinting at significant use. Carved into the side of the wood are seven tally marks, each one potentially signifying a story or a notable use in its mysterious past.
“I’m getting out of here before you decide to use that thing!”
– my grandfather, observing me hammering large nails into a baseball bat.
